New Features
The SMC Axle Clutch was
improved for the 1998 racing season. Six changes were made for the sake of
speed and durability.
1. The new housing is
machined from a single piece of aluminum. Compared to the former two piece
assembly, the various diameters are almost perfectly concentric.
2. The studs are machined
from a stronger steel and heat treated.
3. The link has a continuous
180° bend instead of the two 90° bends for greater strength.
4. The pressure plate is
made of bronze instead of steel for smoother engagements and reduced wear.
5. A washer located between
the primary weights and splines prevents damage to both if the clutch is
improperly adjusted.
6. The speed collar is now
equipped with a ball bearing. Wear on both the shaft and the speed collar
is eliminated. The added support also extends the life of the main
bearing.
